Participants

Football programs are provided for the first through eighth grade students. Grade level is determined by the player's September grade level. First and second graders play flag football. Third and fourth graders play together in the Minor Tackle League, and fifth and sixth graders play in the Major Tackle League. 7th and 8th grade player will play in the SSYFL, South Suburban Youth Football League. Teams are from Eastview, Rosemount, Apple Valley, Eagan and Lakeville. For questions contact myself, Don Nelson, VAA Football Commissioner, through the VAA Website.

Coaches are selected by the Football Commissioner. Each team is allowed one head coach and two assistants. You must pass a background check. Parents who desire to coach at can express interest at walk in sign ups or through the VAA website as part of their on line sign-ups. Preference is given to parents who have coached the previous year and received favorable parent evaluations. Coaches will also be required to attend a clinic covering issues such as playbooks, rules, position/skill play, concussions, strains and sprains. Coaches will no longer be allowed to choose asst coaches. Asst coaches will be assigned with a team not with the head coach. This action is to avoid stacking of teams.

Teams

Teams playing tackle football are selected through a process based on the child's weight and grade level. Players will be weighed in during equipment pick up and will not be placed on a team until they are weighed. Coaches will receive official rosters at the designated coaches meeting. No car pool requests are accepted. Flag football teams are set by schools, and evenly divided between grades. After teams have been selected, only a limited number of late players will be accepted in order to fill out rosters.

7th and 8th grade practices can begin August 1 and Major, Minor and Flag Practices begin in August 8th. Times and locations are set by the coaching staff. Major, Minor, and flag teams are limited to no more than four practices per week prior to the start of the regular season. During the regular season teams are limited to the two games and two Practices. The Majors, Minors and Flag teams each play ten regular season games, beginning in Late August, calendar dependent, or early September and ending in mid October. All games are at Hayes Community Center. Flag teams play on Tuesday or Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. Minor teams play on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. Major teams play on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings. The Major League has a post-season playoff tournament with the championship game at Apple Valley High School's Varsity stadium. The flag and minor teams do not have playoffs. Minor teams have an all players participating all star game at the end of the season also in the Varsity stadium. SSYFL will have a 9 game season and playoffs. Also beginning in Late August, calendar dependent, or early September and ending in mid October. 7/8th grade games will be played at Valley Middle school or behind the high school at the JV and Freshman fields.

We will have pants available for purchase at Also, all equipment, including the jersey (7th and 8th grade only), must be returned to VAA in order to keep the participation cost low. Flag players are provide with a game tee shirt which they may keep.
